DIRECT FROM CUBA
BALLET REVOLUCIÓN
ALL-NEW PRODUCTION RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA IN 2018

Profile

Direct from Cuba, Ballet Revolución – the show that has taken Europe by storm – returns to Australia for a national tour in April and May with a brand new production. Ballet Revolución is recharged, rebooted and ready for its Australian fans once again.

The Australian tour begins in Brisbane on 26 April followed by shows in Perth, Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Tickets go on sale on in late November.

Audiences all over the world simply cannot get enough of the Cuban dancers’ exuberant energy and contagious joy of life with which they turn any idea into an explosive and intense performance. With breathtaking twists, daring jumps and sensual moves from ballet to street dance, Ballet Revolución has already thrilled audiences in sold-out shows from Singapore to Berlin, Vienna and London.

“An irresistible Cuban cocktail of ferocious sensuality,” raved The Australian after their previous show’s world premiere in Sydney. Some of Cuba’s most talented artists dance to Latin American music with R&B and hip hop to produce a mix of modern dance styles and elegant ballet with Afro-Cuban dance traditions. “It is dazzlingly fast-paced, humorous and sizzlingly hot- blooded,” gushed the Daily Express after the sold-out performances in London, while the Tagesspiegel wrote after the German premiere in Berlin: “Once the Cuban dancers get going with their athletic bodies and exuberant temperament, it gets really hot.”

The dancers were trained at one of the world’s most prestigious dance institutions in their home country, the Escuela Nacional de Arte, with its renowned faculty of modern dance, and at the famous Escuela Nacional de Ballet for classical dance. Dance training is strongly promoted in Cuba, as dance means more than art: on the Caribbean island, it means “life”.

Leading Australian choreographer Aaron Cash, along with Cuban choreographer Roclan Gonzalez Chavez, blend breathtaking contemporary moves with salsa and Cuban dance to produce a unique fusion, resulting in an explosion of unbridled passion and raw energy, with a distinctly Cuban flavour.

Boundless passion, attractive sensuality, stunning athleticism and exuberant joy of life, Ballet Revolución combines it all in a fireball of emotions that no one can escape.

Strictly limited season, Ballet Revolución returns to Australia in April and May.

THE ROOTS OF THE BALLET REVOLUCIÓN DANCERS

Dance was born in Cuba. Although little is known about the most primitive dance form native to Cuba – the ceremonial “Areito“ of the native Arawak Indians – the dance is so deeply ingrained in Cuba, so broadly extended in all areas of life as in no other country on earth. Dancing on a professional level, however, is a relatively recent phenomenon in Cuba. Professional dance such as ballet and modern dance, however, could hardly find a more fertile ground to blossom in any place other than this Caribbean island. Today there are around 50 dance groups in Cuba and the number is constantly growing.

Cuba is continually developing new talent and has produced an astonishing number of outstanding dance artists, who continue to shine in its own big companies and all over the world. All this, even though it is a relatively small country with its 11 million inhabitants. Maybe it is not so surprising, really, for a nation of people to whom dance is as essential as daylight. But there is another contributing factor: excellent training and a firm commitment to the development of young talent. The main facility for training in the arts is the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA). The academy actively seeks out the most talented children and young people from the country’s 14 provinces. After studying there, many of the graduates from the dance department join the country’s leading companies – among them many of the dancers of Ballet Revolución.

The young Cuban dancers of Ballet Revolución's let their athletic bodies do the talking with their outstanding sensuality producing a mix of modern dance styles and elegant ballet with Afro-Cuban dance traditions - oustandingly choreographed to the No.1 hit music of Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, Enrique Iglesias, Adele, Cold Play, Camila "Havana" Cabillo and Prince.

Cuba – mother of all dance? Maybe. Mother of the greatest of dancers? Definitely.
