GARY PUCKETT and The Union Gap
RETURN FOLLOWING HIGHLY-SUCCESSFUL AUSTRALIAN TOUR IN FEBRUARY 2013

Profile

Following the highly-successful 2010 Australian Tour, GARY PUCKETT and the UNION GAP return to our Shores in February 2013. GARY PUCKETT possessed an unmistakable signature voice as the lead singer of GARY PUCKETT and the UNION GAP. They were one of the most successful musical groups of the sixties garnering six consecutive gold records and top ten Billboard hits such "YOUNG GIRL", "WOMAN WOMAN", "LADY WILLPOWER", "OVER YOU", "THIS GIRL IS A WOMAN NOW", "KEEP THE CUSTOMER SATISFIED","DON'T GIVE IN TO HIM", "HOME" and many others. Abstract Entertainment announces the upcoming Australian Tour of GARY PUCKETT and the UNION GAP in February 2013.

‘Rediscover the sounds of the 60's.’

GARY PUCKETT grew up in Yakima, Washington - close to the city of Union Gap - and Twin Falls, Idaho. He began playing guitar in his teens, and after graduation he quit college and played in several local bands before joining the Outcasts, comprising bassist Kerry Chater, keyboardist Gary 'Mutha' Withem, tenor saxophonist Dwight Bement and drummer Paul Wheatbread. Under new management the band were renamed The Union Gap in early 1967, and kitted themselves out with Union Army-style Civil War uniforms as a visual gimmick. They signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. The band recorded their first single, "WOMAN WOMAN". It became their first hit, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and being certified a gold record. This was followed during the next two years by "YOUNG GIRL" (#2), "LADY WILLPOWER" (#2), "OVER YOU" (#7), and "DON'T GIVE IN TO HIM" (#15). Although the band never had a #1 record in the United States, "YOUNG GIRL" reached #1 on the UK singles chart, and #6 when it was reissued in the UK six years later. Controversial at the time and later for its risque lyrical references to underage romance - "My love for you is way out of line/ You better run, girl, you're much too young, girl" - it was dramatically delivered by GARY PUCKETT with a memorable strings and brass arrangement. "YOUNG GIRL" was the second million selling disc for the band, which it reached less than two months after issue; "LADY WILLPOWER" and "OVER YOU" also won gold discs. The band were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1969. The Union Gap disbanded in 1971. It should be noted that Gary Puckett has performed on more than 30 network television shows and prime time television specials during his career; even adding a command performance for the U.S President and Prince Charles at the White House.

In 1974, "YOUNG GIRL" was reissued in England where it received a silver record award for attaining a top five position on the pop charts, several years after its initial release. Since then GARY PUCKETT has been extremely busy performing on more than 30 network television shows and prime time specials during his career. In 1974 “YOUNG GIRL” was reissued by popular request in England where it reached number five and achieved a Silver Record Award for the second time. This was a full six years after the song was initially released. In 1986 GARY PUCKETT was invited to tour with the Monkees on their national reunion tour, which established itself as a major hit of the 1986 touring season. In 2001, GARY PUCKETT released his latest CD, "In Europe". Originally recorded in Europe, this CD has new versions of "YOUNG GIRL" and "LADY WILLPOWER", with a European flair. In March 2002, GARY PUCKETT released "Live", a collection of hits recorded live and featuring the song "HOME", dedicated to the men and women defending our country with their lives. In 2009, GARY PUCKETT and THE UNION GAP was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame. In November 2009 the cast of the hit television series "GLEE" paid tribute with the dual recording of "YOUNG GIRL" with Sting's "DON'T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME".
