In 1972 they garnered No.1 in the Music Charts for 5 Weeks with "Amazing Grace", selling over 7-million copies worldwide. This was followed by major hits such as "The Last Of The Mohicans", "Highland Cathedral", "Dances With Wolves", "Soldier, Soldier", "The Braveheart Trilogy" and "Going Home" as recorded with Songwriter/Guitarist Mark Knopfler. The following year the band was upgraded to Grade 1 where it stayed for nearly 10 years followed by many World Championships over the years. A particularly successful year was 1987 under Pipe Major John Bruce. The then Commanding Officer, Lt Col Melville Jameson, allowed the band to spend the complete summer in Scotland to compete. It was during this time that it gained 5th at the British Championships, 4th at the European Championships and 10th place at the World Championships. The Pipes and Drums of THE ROYAL SCOTS DRAGOON GUARDS promises to be a spectacular concert that will give audiences a whole new experience in classic pipe tunes along with some modern arrangements and a rare insight into the talent and a stature of one of the greatest Scottish bands of all time. "Rousing the spirit and the heart.... a musical journey with Scotland's Senior Regiment!" Douglas Doherty – scotdisk.uk Proudly Presented by ATA Allstar Artists Background Information.... The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are Scotland’s most senior and only regular cavalry regiment, formed in 1678. The Regiment has recently re-rolled to Light Cavalry after 75 years in tanks and has also moved from Germany to Fife. The Regiment is currently undergoing training to be at readiness as the Light Cavalry Regiment of choice. The new role of Light Cavalry is at the forefront of the British Army’s organisation, primarily as a mounted combat unit, but also working alongside other armies around the world. Locations The Regiment’s Home Headquarters is in Edinburgh Castle. The Colonel of the Regiment and the Regimental Secretary have offices there. The Regimental Museum is also there, where the history of the Regiment is explained in a state-of-the-art exhibition high up in the Castle itself. The serving regiment is currently based in Leuchars, Fife, where they are based in Waterloo lines and are part of 51 Brigade. As part of the Light Cavalry Role soldiers from the SCOT DG can be posted across the globe on Exercises, Training Teams or Operations; however Fife will remain the regiment’s home. The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are world famous. Achieving a prestigious Classical Brit Award in 2008 for best album “Spirit of the Glen: Journey”, partly recorded while on operations in Iraq in 2008. Regularly performing at high-profile engagements, including the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Basel Tattoo, the Pipes and Drums are constantly engaged in the composition of music, international performances, such as the Hong Kong International Tattoo in 2012, and competing across the world. Remarkably all the members of the band are fighting soldiers first and musicians second. History The Pipe Band has achieved some amazing success. In 1972 the band was no.1 in charts for 5 weeks with Amazing Grace, ousting Nilsson's Without You from the no.1 spot, before being replaced by T-Rex's Metal Guru. The band won the World Championships in Grade 2 in 1982 under Pipe Major John Allan. The following year the band was upgraded to Grade 1 where it stayed for nearly 10 years. In 1990 the Pipes and Drums were deployed to the Gulf as tank crewman during Op Granby which was part of Desert Storm. Unfortunately this meant the band was split up for nearly 10 months and was subsequently downgraded to a Grade 2 band. Since then, the operational commitments of the band have continued to limit the amount of competing. Regimental History and Traditions The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards was formed in 1971 from the amalgamation of the 3rd Carabiniers and the Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons). The regiment has its own Pipes and Drums, who were first formed in 1946 and tour widely, performing in competitions, concerts and parades. Their most famous piece is "Amazing Grace", which reached number one in the charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa in 1972. The track sold over seven million copies by mid 1977, and was awarded a gold disc. The band released a new CD in late November 2007 through Universal Music, featuring a number of classic pipe tunes along with some modern arrangements and was recorded while the regiment was based in Iraq. The album Spirit Of The Glen was produced by Jon Cohen and released by Universal on 26 November 2007. It featured a remake of their famous "Amazing Grace", which featured an orchestra playing in back, they called it "Amazing Grace 2007". Spirit Of The Glenwas officially launched at Edinburgh Castle and won Album of the Year at the 2009 Classical Brits. They have also made regular appearances at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo over the years. |
